The New Year Begins

We have held our elections during the October meeting at the schoolhouse. The only change was the election of Donna Kirsch to the position of Financial Secretary. We are looking forward to having her perform the duties of this office. The Society's newest endeavor is the printing of a newsletter to be available to all. Final items are being added, so that it may go to print within a few weeks. My THANKS to the members, whose hard work and dedication are making this possible. We will be taking a winter break with the next scheduled meeting for February 16,2012 in the schoolhouse at 7:00P.M.

Thoughts about 2011

My year as president is almost over, our year runs from November 1 to October 31.

New Displays

The displays put up before the Annual yardsale are still up and easily viewed. They may be viewed during open hours or by special appointment. Thde displays consist of 1. an early 20th century ladies fashions displayed on dress forms and hung around the area. They were the clothing of the great grand mother of one of the members. Another display 2. is on the Sheldon Town Band and consists of pictures, atricles of their uniforms and some of the instruments used by them.

2011 Yardsale successful

The 2011 Townwide yard sale was successful this year,THANKS to the efforts of the many members whom participated in the 2 day event. The Basket Raffle went very well and my thanks to the persons whom set the tents up, waterproofed them( we had a brief torrential rain on Saturday afternoon),sold the tickets & manned the table. I especially would like to thank the area individuals and businesses that contributed the baskets to be raffled off. This has become quite an event since started over 20 years ago and is looked forward to by many.

Wyoming County Federation of Historical Societies Annual Spring Workshop

A Civil War battle broke out in the Town of Sheldon on Saturday, April 24, 2010 on the church grounds of St. Mary's RC Church, Strykersville NY. The skirmish, which included volleys of cannon fire, rifle shots and a man-to-man combat was the centerpiece of the Wyoming County Federation of Historical Societies Annual Spring Workshop. Well-known re-enactors, Terry Parker, Don Baker and Robert Yott shared their vast knowledge of the Civil War with an audience of professional historians and the general public. The attendees were thrilled when visited by none other than President Abraham Lincoln who mingled freely with the participants and regaled them with his sharp wit and engaging stories about the family. This year's event was hosted and presented by the Sheldon Historical Society.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Thank you, friends for visiting the website of the Town of Sheldon Historical Society, a volunteer group dedicated to the preservation of local history and sustaining the School House Museum for generations to come.

This group was founded in 1927, but had “run out of steam” by mid-century. Fortunately, a group of dedicated citizens came together in the mid-1970’s to save the Sheldon School #10 from demolition, and subsequently reorganize the historical society. Known today as the School House Museum, the building is the pride of Sheldon and the heart of activity for the Historical Society.
